The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) will be hosting its 20thNational Congress from the 22 to the 25th October 2020 at the Champagne Sports Resort Central Drakensberg.

The organisers are planning an event designed for the needs of psychiatrists in the academic sector, the public sector, the private sector, for psychiatric registrars, general practitioners with an interest in psychiatry and the rest of the psychiatric multi-professional team. We don’t simply want to copy and paste from previous congresses, but really want to assess the needs of the participants of the national congress. We have therefore created a survey for all prospective delegates to participate in to assess their needs and expectations. Please participate in this survey to assist the committee to organise an event that will address your needs and expectations.

We are also planning an event around networking with colleagues. The daily program will only start at 08:00 in the morning with breakfast sessions and will end at 14:00 every day to give time for delegates to relax, network and enjoy their surroundings. The venue offers great opportunities for various networking activities or just resting. We want you to make use of the time created to fulfil not only your academic needs but the need to spend some time with your colleagues.

To further enhance the experience at the conference, a dedicated program and venue have been set aside, that will run continuously, showing movies with discussion, musical and art presentations and events.

The event will also be the first SASOP Congress to reduce its carbon and plastic footprint. We have launched a project with great enthusiasm of our sponsors to suggest novel ideas of building sustainable, non-plastic stands, with the aim of re-using the materials in a building project to support the local community. Without “letting the cat out of the bag”, this alone would be an inspiration to attend the conference.

To further reduce our paper footprint, we are planning to move to more digitally inspired marketing and poster presentation areas.

The program will run over 4 days, starting, for those energetic enough, with a presidential walk / run early, then a breakfast session from 08:00 to 09:00, breakaway sessions for 90 minutes, tea time, a plenary session for 90 minutes, another 90 minutes of breakaway sessions, ending at 14:00 for lunch and free time.

The organising committee warmly invites you and is looking forward to hosting you for this event. We have therefore also created special tariffs for early-early bird registrations and early bird registrations with a marked reduction off the normal registration fee.

See you there!
